Knife blades should be facing towards the plate and fork prongs facing upwards.

Again cutlery should be about 1 inch out from the edge of the plates. Table setting is an art form with rules to be followed for arranging the cutlery plates and glasses.
Center the dinner plate upon the place mat. Place your cutlery in the order that it will be used starting from the outside. The rule of thumb is the place mat should begin about 1 inch from the edge of the table. Always place knives with the blade facing inward on your table setting.
The picture shows the correct positioning. Place all forks to the left of the dinner plate. Put the dinner knife and soup spoon on the right side of the plate and the fork on the left. Place a dinner plate in the centre of the setting and lay forks to the left of the plate and knives and spoons to the right.
